Titus Androncius Production

Shown below is our version of the Titus Andronicus production that we had to create with the drama academy. After seeing this film shown on the big screen at the BFI I feel that we as a group achieved a great deal of work and that it looked to a professional standard. The one thing that I do wish though is that we could of had a couple more hours to film and edit, the reason for this is because their was such a tight deadline we have to skip over parts and thus was not able to get the final product to an even higher quality.

What I felt worked extremely well was how the drama students and my media class was able to get on well enough that their was no big arguments and we was just able to get on with things. I feel the actors performed to a high enough level and helped make this product look even greater, along with them I had my team which included Ryan and Lee who did a great job getting the sound, using the second camera and also the combined effort worked really well as the final product had our on take on how it should be.

I think the only thing I would of liked to improve was the final part of the scene was Abby has been killed by Georgia. From here on we had to rush the shooting as it was getting dark very quickly and left us short for time which meant we could only film the most crucial shots and not explore any other interesting ways.

My role during the production of Titus Andronicus was to keep an eye on the actors so that they remained focus, I used the main camera for the majority of the shooting and also directed a lot of it on the day and told Sam how i thought it should be shot and how it should cut so that it looked good

Summary of Audience Research

Here are the results for the Questionnaire on music videos.
These results show that pop music is one of the highest genres of music in demand. By looking at these results, I can gain an indication of what is expected from me to put in my performance. Knowing what the audience expects, allows me as the producer to communicate to them. It is important to do this research as I need to know who my audience is, if I do not know what they expect, I will create a product which they would not be interested in, by doing this research, I can find out what they do and don't like, I will also be able to decide what to include in my music video, so that it appeals to them.

Information on Companies Involved

Negotiating a Brief

Here is some of the research we did when negotiating to a brief

For our brief, we shall be negotiating three key ideas of ours for the product, these include, the location of the filming, the costumes the characters will wear, and how we want it edited for the final piece. However, we will not be able to negotiate the extract we are given, that has been set in stone as the company that has given us the brief, has already decided what schools will do what part. The time it will require to record also could not be negotiated as a deadline has all been set, so that each school has their extract in on time, so that the BFI can start putting them together.

Location Visit Sheet

Here are the planning documents from when we was deciding where the best place to shoot would be.

The park will be a good choice to films at, this is because the specific location that we want to film at is very much away from open areas, as it is on top of a hill surrounded by trees, it feels very isolated as if you are trapped in especially with the amount of people we will have on the day in the area, it will feel tightly pact in, this will help give of the feel we want to the audience as the actors should feel it themselves, it will work a lot better than if we was to use an open space because there would be a lot of things the audience could see, by having it in this secluded area, the audience should feel a lot more confined.

The Types of Briefs

Here are the types of briefs that people can be assigned, below I have explained each type and their purpose

Health and Safety

Below is a sheet we had to fill in to take into account the health and safety issues we may face whilst going out to film.

Storyboards

During the story boarding we decided to use these particular shots as we felt it would give the audience a clear understanding of the play as it would clearly establish the two sides and also the main characters within the play, for example we often use close ups of the main character Titus as he has a lot of lines in this scene so this establishes who the speaker is. Tamora in the play is also going through a painful scene as her son is about to be killed as the father wants revenge for his fallen sons in the war, we use close ups and high angle shots of Tamora as we want her to look weak and sad to give of the sympathetic effect to the audience. Another way we wanted to establish the power balance in this scene is through using low angles shots of Titus, by doing we was able to make him look like the most powerful person in the room and also make him look like he is in command of everybody in the room. In the scene the dead bodies of the fallen are brought into by the Romans, to show them as weak. We also use a pan at the start when the characters are coming into the tomb, we do this so that it can help establish the area so that the audience can get a good feel of the room and so it sets the right atmosphere for the audience, also by using this pan it helps show other characters in the tomb so it helps establish who these characters are early on. A long shot is also used on the captured sons to show them in chains, this is simply so that it shows them as weak and small as they are showed clearly on their knees about to be killed and the guard towering over them.

Summary of Market Research

Here I have gathered information on album sale figures, and also individual songs and how they were received by the public through the like and dislike system on YouTube. By looking at this, you can see that pop and electronic dance songs and videos are often quite successful. Rap and Rock music doesn't seem to be a favorite by the public at this moment in time, and the market for a pop and electronic dance videos is much larger. The best place to put a music video would be on YouTube, it seems from looking at viewing figures, not many people watch music channels anymore, instead the majority of people will go to YouTube to watch or listen to a music video. This is because the web is a lot wider now, and people can easily view YouTube on their Android phones through the App. This is more convenient for people and can let them watch anything they want whenever, compared to a TV station which you have to wait and don't have a clear indication to when a song will be played. It is important to do this research to learn what platform it is best to put my music video so that it gains the most views, I would rather put the video on YouTube, as with the growth of the internet onto mobile devices along with PC's, I can have a bigger audience, also people find it better to watch a video on YouTube as they don't have to wait. YouTube also generates ad revenue from its ads before the break, so if millions were to watch it, the money generated would make up for the loss in TV revenue.

Video Footage Review

Camera One

We must re-shoot the scene at the start when Georgia and the actor who plays Titus are saying their speech and drag of the prisoner, we feel this because as a group less effect was given off by the actors despite the good acting, I feel we need shot reverse shots and low angle shots when Georgia looks down at the prisoners as it will help give of a better effect to the audience and also be more convincing as if they are actual prisoners about to be killed by the Romans.

Another shot that has to be re-shot is when the actors are coming up the hill, this is because on the day we did not have access to the fig rig and because of this t=we could not get the shots we had planned as a group, with the fig rig I want to get a lot more close ups of the army walking up the hill and also have some tracking shots with them walking as it will make them seem as a stronger and larger force if we show them more in unison walking together carrying their weapons.

Another shot that we should re-shoot is when Abby is being dragged down the hill by the two guards, this looked good however I feel that when she is dragged of the actors walked out of the shot too fast and this made it seem less effective, onto of this when they are being taken down the hill I feel that from another angle it would look a lot better than the current ones we have, I feel that instead we could do a pan of her being dragged to the hill and then cutting it to the other camera to see them walking down the hill.

Second Camera

Some shots I think we should add in which we kind of got from the second camera but not to a full extent are more close ups of the people treading through the mud, also I feel that we need some close ups of the prisoners tied up along with more facial reactions of the guards.

I feel when they are the bottom of the hill returning from the war we need to add in a lot more shots from different angles to create a bigger presence and make them look a lot more intimidating, this can be done through using some close ups on the fig rig whilst tracking backwards as they walk, some low angle shots to have the towering over the camera and looking powerful and also some close up of of their feet walking past the camera to make it seem as if a lot of people are walking by.

Review of Titus Andronicus

When watching Titus Andronicus on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company all my expectations were met, I thought it was a fantastic piece of drama which has gave me plenty ideas of what I would like to do for my segment I have to recreate on Monday, I thought that the start of the play was very good and it met what I expected, it is a very intense play with lots of death and betrayal, at times the play did become hard to understand however as the story progressed the bits I did not understand came to light and my questions were answered. I felt thought that later on in the play when Titus was meant to be crazy he was slightly over played, by this I mean he was meant to pretending to be crazy yet he came across as if he had completely lost it and the maid dress he was wearing added to this and because it was over played it became less believable , however the acting of other characters was to a very high standard and if my group performs anything like the across in the play which I feel they can do the piece I have to film will be of a very high standard.

This has influenced my decisions  that I will make as a director , as I have learned about the positioning of the characters, how they will appear on set and move within the shot, also I have learned from watching this about the type of energy I need my actors to give of for the performance.

We will be using a slightly edited script from the one that was used in this performance, the language will remain the same, however to fit it all into one piece, we shall be cutting out part of the scene. Seeing this live performance has gave me an insight in how this new shot should be presented, in order to capture the Shakespearean style.

Assessing the Joint Session

With the drama academy we had to view their performance that they had put together and give our feedback on it, this was all done so both the media and drama groups could get a clear understanding of one another, so that we knew what had to be done, what had already been done and so their was no surprises when we would go off to film for the first time, this help establish our ideas for the group so we could see each others ideas and try to put them together so that it would form a professional piece of work, the key decisions made varied quite a lot, this is because their was a lot of compromising being made so that both groups were happy, our main issue we had when watching the performance was the fact that what they had done was very theatrical whilst we needed something more to a professional film level, we told them our thoughts on this and presented them with a storyboard so that our idea of what we was trying to produce could get through more clearly to them, the issue was raised of what they should wear, originally I along with my group wanted them to wear the clothes of the time period so that it would look as authentic as possible, however because of the actual cost we had to adapt our ideas slightly, from speaking to the group we all agreed that it might be easier for the performers to adapt a modern style for the film, this will include the goths wearing black type clothes and black make up so that they will look like actual goths whilst the Romans will be played as people dressed as ''chavs'' in tracksuits so that the two contrast each other well. When talking about how to make this more of a film so we would have a balance suited by everyone we discussed the shot types and positioning that would need to be used, from their original idea they was very close together which caused issues as it was really staged like a film should be, we told them to use the area around them more and be more open and because of this it does look a lot more professional.
When it comes to the actual film still being our vision I would say it no longer is, I am more happier with what has been changed and feel with my teem of people helping me film it will look really good, the issue is simply though that they want it to be theatrical and we want it to be fully film. We have a god balance where we have worked together so I am not worried about the final outcome or what it may actually look like but I do not feel we can get the best of of the scene now because of the two different viewpoints on how it will be done. I feel that on the day when we go of to start filming my team of Ryan, Lee and Hollie can capture a lot of good shots and put them together to make a scene that is of a professional level, the only issue we will have is getting them to adapt to a camera than a live audience, I feel that their are three specific actors that we can work with really well as they seemed very committed to the process of actually making the video and seemed to enjoy being in front of the camera, these people have important roles in the scene so seeing them perform to such a high level is a good thing for both of us as it will get them a good grade and by them being very motivated and giving a great performance it will be easier to capture the shots so that look more natural and realistic.

I have taken this scene below as I feel it is a good example of what I want from it, as you can see the people are spaced out really well which is good as it makes it seem more realistic unlike when people are on stage and cramped together, in the actual park they will be more spaced out and have a lot more of things going on in the background which will feature in the cutaways we put in. Whilst people are speaking we want to follow the basic conventions of film by using close ups of their faces whilst we have cutaways between shots so that the characters are established easier and it looks like a film.

Titus Andronicus Research

Synopsis of the play Titus Andronicus

Source http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/titus/summary.html

By S. Clarke Hulse's count, Titus Andronicus is a play with "14 killings, 9 of them on stage, 6 severed members, 1 rape (or 2 or 3, depending on how you count), 1 live burial, 1 case of insanity and 1 of cannibalism--an average of 5.2 atrocities per act, or one for every 97 lines." Reviewer Mike Gene Wallace adds, "This is a great play. We're talking fourteen dead bodies, kung-fu, sword-fu, spear-fu, dagger-fu, arrow-fu, pie-fu, animal screams on the soundtrack, heads roll, hands roll, tongues roll, nine and a half quarts of blood, and a record-breaking 94 on the vomit meter." Really, there's not much more to say; that is the essence of the play. Titus Andronicus is a non-stop potboiler catalog of abominations (with the poetry itself counted as a crime by many critics).
Titus Andronicus, Roman general, returns from ten years of war with only four out of twenty-five sons left. He has captured Tamora, Queen of the Goths, her three sons, and Aaron the Moor. In obedience to Roman rituals, he sacrifices her eldest son to his own dead sons, which earns him Tamora's unending hatred and her promise of revenge.
Tamora is made empress by the new emperor Saturninus. To get back at Titus, she schemes with her lover Aaron to have Titus's two sons framed for the murder of Bassianus, the emperor's brother. Titus's sons are beheaded. Unappeased, she urges her sons Chiron and Demetrius to rape Titus's daughter Lavinia, after which they cut off her hands and tongue so she cannot give their crime away. Finally, even Titus's last surviving son Lucius is banished from Rome; he subsequently seeks alliance with the enemy Goths in order to attack Rome. Each new misfortune hits the aged, tired Titus with heavier impact. Eventually, he begins to act oddly and everyone assumes that he is crazy.
Tamora tries to capitalize on his seeming madness by pretending to be the figure of Revenge, come to offer him justice if Titus will only convince Lucius to cease attacking Rome. Titus, having feigned his madness all along, tricks her, captures her sons, kills them, and makes pie out of them. He feeds this pie to their mother in the final scene, after which he kills both Tamora and Lavinia, his own daughter. A rash of killings ensue; the only people left alive are Marcus, Lucius, Young Lucius, and Aaron. Lucius has the unrepentant Aaron buried alive, and Tamora's corpse thrown to the beasts. He becomes the new emperor of Rome.

Characteristics of the film

Some of the key characteristics of the play feature its dark edge, by this I mean you often see death on average 5.2 acts of atrocities per act.
It also features a lot of gruesome scenes in which adds to the so called horror of the play. This can be seen with the cannibalism scene and the actual manner the characters are killed in, their is no real peaceful death in the play.
The play also centers around the tale of revenge. One one person is killed from one side they are revenged by a death on the other until the end of the play when the 2 sons are severed up in a pie.

Our scene analysis

This is the film we shall be performing, here you can see how dark the film is just from the early stages as the "Goths" are captured as they have lost the 10 year war and now are about to be killed in revenge for the fallen sons due to the war, you can see the anguish in the eyes of the characters. The location adds to the effect that the dark presence that is given of from this play as the scene appears to take play inside of a tomb which has very low key lighting and adds to the dark side of the play. The "Goths" are in chains and treated like animals to get across the sense that they are now prisoners and have no rights or privileges as shown when they are dragged about.

Script from our scene

TITUS ANDRONICUS
Hail, Rome, victorious in thy mourning weeds!
Lo, as the bark, that hath discharged her fraught,
Returns with precious jading to the bay
From whence at first she weigh'd her anchorage,
Cometh Andronicus, bound with laurel boughs,
To re-salute his country with his tears,
Tears of true joy for his return to Rome.
Thou great defender of this Capitol,
Stand gracious to the rites that we intend!
Romans, of five and twenty valiant sons,
Half of the number that King Priam had,
Behold the poor remains, alive and dead!
These that survive let Rome reward with love;
These that I bring unto their latest home,
With burial amongst their ancestors:
Here Goths have given me leave to sheathe my sword.
Titus, unkind and careless of thine own,
Why suffer'st thou thy sons, unburied yet,
To hover on the dreadful shore of Styx?
Make way to lay them by their brethren.

The tomb is opened

There greet in silence, as the dead are wont,
And sleep in peace, slain in your country's wars!
O sacred receptacle of my joys,
Sweet cell of virtue and nobility,
How many sons of mine hast thou in store,
That thou wilt never render to me more!

LUCIUS
Give us the proudest prisoner of the Goths,
That we may hew his limbs, and on a pile
Ad manes fratrum sacrifice his flesh,
Before this earthy prison of their bones;
That so the shadows be not unappeased,
Nor we disturb'd with prodigies on earth.

TITUS ANDRONICUS
I give him you, the noblest that survives,
The eldest son of this distressed queen.

TAMORA
Stay, Roman brethren! Gracious conqueror,
Victorious Titus, rue the tears I shed,
A mother's tears in passion for her son:
And if thy sons were ever dear to thee,
O, think my son to be as dear to me!
Sufficeth not that we are brought to Rome,
To beautify thy triumphs and return,
Captive to thee and to thy Roman yoke,
But must my sons be slaughter'd in the streets,
For valiant doings in their country's cause?
O, if to fight for king and commonweal
Were piety in thine, it is in these.
Andronicus, stain not thy tomb with blood:
Wilt thou draw near the nature of the gods?
Draw near them then in being merciful:
Sweet mercy is nobility's true badge:
Thrice noble Titus, spare my first-born son.

TITUS ANDRONICUS
Patient yourself, madam, and pardon me.
These are their brethren, whom you Goths beheld
Alive and dead, and for their brethren slain
Religiously they ask a sacrifice:
To this your son is mark'd, and die he must,
To appease their groaning shadows that are gone.

LUCIUS
Away with him! and make a fire straight;
And with our swords, upon a pile of wood,
Let's hew his limbs till they be clean consumed.

Exeunt LUCIUS, QUINTUS, MARTIUS, and MUTIUS, with ALARBUS

TAMORA
O cruel, irreligious piety!

Music Channel Logo Sketches

These are the rough sketching I have made for the music channel logo's and from this I will base my idea for each logo from these drawings as I feel they would work well with each different channel and represent it well.

Music Channel Logos

Here are the music channel logos are have designed in Photoshop.

This logo here has been designed for a Techno music channel, I have used a style font which reflects this and dark green coulours which are often associated with techno music. On the logo I have also put a broken lock in the background since the channel name is called "Lock'' so I felt it was appropriate to relate the logo in some way to the name of the channel. In the background I also included a city that has been lighted up to look more club like so that it fits in well with the channels branding. This logo will be saved as a JPG file as it does not require a lot of space for storage and would work well on posters a billboards. It is better to use a JPG for this instead of a Vector file as their is a lot of stuff in this image so that file format would not work well.

With this logo I have made it very colourful and bright, this is because this logo is for a kids music channel which would feature famous Disney songs along with famous film musicals. To make it child friendly I went for bright colours which has a lot of things going on as this is for children and something simple would not appeal to them as much. This image will also be used as a JPG because as a Raster file for this would not work well on a large scale, if this was to be put on a large poster or billboard then the image would become pixelated so it is best to use a JPG instead.

This logo is intended for very relaxing and laid back music that you would hear through artists like Bob Marley, too reflect the calmness of the logo I made it a light blue to represent waves whilst putting waves in the actual background and then used a outer and inner glow effect so that it has a tightly compact rainbow around the letters which are meant to be ''tripey'' and look soothing.
My final image will also be a JPG, my reasons for this is because it is very common for big companies to use JPG files for large scale images as they do not pixelate when put on a large scale and would well for advertisement.

Feedback

Here is the feedback on my ident from other people. From it I have gained a clear understanding on how to improve it to a greater standard for example. The footage is not always in focus and the camera is being moved about which makes the shots look out of place from one another, this was because the camera I used was on a low battery which required me to change the batteries throughout filming it, to avoid this I will make sure the battery is charged before taking the camera next time and may even use my own camera so that the detail is a lot better.

Changes to my Ident

Media B-Tec by chelseaandrew14 on GoAnimate

Looking at the feedback I have received from people I shall make my main focus for improvement to be to make sure that each shot is steady, this is because it is moving quite a lot in the ident due to me having to more the camera around a lot as the batteries kept dyeing. This made each shot look very jittery and worsened as I had to speed up the process in which the shots changed.

Also it is not that clear in what type of channel is being presented so I shall look into this and try to include scenes that show exactly what type of shows this has to other eg. Music, US Sitcoms and chat shows.

I also need to keep the floor free of play dough because as the ident was moving about it was causing pieces to fall apart which didn't look that good and messed up the mise en scene.

I think their also needs to be a change in the entire mise en scene, this is because although it suits the area being in a living room where most of watching TV happens, it is not that creative and therefore becomes quite common.

The camera quality is also not that good which decreased the quality of the picture so I may have to change it in order to make each picture look more professional.

With these changes I feel that the ident will look a lot different for the right reasons and become very smooth and fluid, the audience will also be able to see this and work out what type of channel it is for.

Magazine Cover Analysis

1)
The type of magazine I have made is a gaming one with information on all of the new gaming news out such as the new PS4 controller design
2)
My target audience is mainly males that are of the ages 12-19 who like gaming
I have appealed to them by putting headings of big gaming news on the front cover, the font of the magazines font is not a serious style of font so it stands out to the audience and the background is of a big Orc which is from gaming which if people were to see they would wounder if they don't already play Warcraft what it is.
3)
The main image I have used is an Orc from the MMORPG game World of Warcraft, iv'e used it because most of the real gamers play on PC due to it being more advanced for gamers compared to an XBOX 360 will recognise and realise this is a gaming magazine and buy it.
4)
The only Photoshop skills I used for the front cover was to mkake the titles stand out, this invlolved double clicking on the text layer and customising their pattern and shadow etc
5)
What I like about my cover is the fact that it is not pixelated from wehen I have had to stretch out the pictures so that they are the correct size and also I like the style of text I used as I feel it suits this genre well and it also stands out to the audience.
6)
What I would improve about my front cover is what is shown on it for example I would of wanted to put more images on it and use a background that had a lot of stuff going on it it however I knew I diid not have enough time for get and design all of this so I had to slightly settle on what I could use.

Shooting Schedule For Ideas

This is the shooting schedule for my 3rd idea

This is the shooting schedule for my 3rd idea

Story Boards

Idea 2
This is the story board for my first idea, it starts of with a normal day until their is an alien invasion that occurs. This ident is a mixture of the one comedy central did where a historic landmark was destroyed and one the E4 did where they had aliens battling.

Idea 4
These ideas involve another alien invasion but instead of having destruction going on this one is of them dancing peaceful with the humans, and unlike the previous one this is made from play dough.

Idea 3
Unlike the previous ones which required things to make them, this one will be drawn on a white bored, because it is on a white bored it will remain colourless and will be interesting not though its colours but what is going on in it.

Idea 1
This ident will be made from play dough. It starts of with old people dancing to classical music which is interrupted by the youth and their new style of dancing thus showing that old people do not belong on this channel and it is dedicated to the youth.

Mind Map Original Ideas

Here are some plans on what my possible idents could be based on, each idea is different from the rest as although they have the same context the ways both have different of how I would make the ident work.
