Brief
You have been commissioned by the Lambeth City Learning Centre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BFI and the management at Glenthorne High School to gain a deeper understanding of Titus Andronicus by filming a scene from the play from a range of different perspectives. You will edit the film to produce a high-quality 3-7 minute segment of film to be screened on a 400 seat cinema screen at the BFI for family and other guests. The films will then have an online life on a variety of platforms including RSC, CLC and BFI websites.
This type of brief would fall under the category of formal. Reasons for this is because the type of brief this is states what it wants us too do and has set guidelines on how we should follow them to achieve the final product. It also fits this type of brief as we was given a deadline on when this product needed to be completed, this left on two possible times we would be able to film. On top of this, the company who presented the brief, had already decided what part from the sequence we would be creating from Titus Andronicus, because of this we was not able to change it, along with what lines would be read out, although we would be allowed to edit some of the text given to us, as long as it remained the same language and same scene. We did however have some input on what the characters would wear and where it would be shot. The project will also have the drama academy working with us, this will help give the performance a better a professional look, as they are more experienced with drama than us.
My role within the group
For the brief, I will take up the role of the main camera man, along with this I also took up the role of director. The role of a director is to direct the making process of a film, they will often how the final say on the dramatic and artistic aspects. As director I am also the liaison between both parties, the parties being the filming crew and the actors, by being the liaison I shall make sure both the groups at at the same stage and share the same vision for the final product. I will also make sure that the actors are equipped with the right equipment and that they know what they are doing in the performance along with the camera crew.
Challenges we face filming this will be mainly the time, We will have two attempts to film the project, in that time we have to make sure that we have everything we need to a good enough standard that can be edited well together. Another challenge we face is working with the actors, this will be the first time we have met these people, and because of this we do not have any clear indication of their style or the type of people they are, because of this, we will have to be clear when communicating our ideas across to them so that the piece is a success. If this is not done, then the product will fall apart. We are going for a more cinematic approach, whilst they are been practicing in a very theater style, we need to get them out of their comfort zones and into a more movie type performance.
Ways we could negotiate our brief, involved the location, costumes, props and the types of shot, we are also able to edit it in our own vision with minimal guidance by the Sam Lawler who had been assigned to help us. We are also able to choose when the scene would take place, it could either be in modern day Britain or set in the past, this will give us some flexibility with the costumes and props. This is also good as the piece of work will also come down to our own interpretation.
However, although we can edit the part of script, we can't negotiate what part of the performance we have to produce, this is frustrating as I feel with my media groups style, a big dramatic and tense scene would have suited us better.
When working on this piece, it will be important to have a good understanding on the Shakespearean language, along with a good knowledge of the script for Titus Andronicus. This is so that as a group, we are able to capture scenes which are supposed to be important to the play, on film, and do not miss any crucial moments. By knowing this we will be able to cut to close ups of the characters at the time, so that their facial features are expressed well to the audience, and the emotion on their faces are shown through.
When we film and edit the product, we shall be using a DSLR to record, and boom so that we can capture high quality audio. Then to edit, the group will be using After Effects and Premiere Pro to edit our pieces. By using a DSLR, we will be able to record in 1080p, which will give us sharper looking shots, and also the use of a boom, will mean that we do not have to worry about the wind blowing on the mic as much, will will prevent any interference with the mic. The use of Premiere Pro will also allow us to edit more smoother, as we can cut frame by frame and use a wide variety of tracks.
When Sam comes into the school to give us a training session, it will be crucial that we all have an open mind to his ideas and a willingness to learn, which will enable us to progress technically as students to a higher level. By having a willingness to learn, it will allow us to improve on our current skills, so that when we begin to film, the outcome will be to a higher level.
It is important that we have good communication and organisational skills when doing this project. This is because we do not know many of the people in the media group, it will be important to tell and discuss with them our ideas for how the piece should look, and also inform them on how the piece should transpire. By having good communication skills, we hope to avoid any confusion on the day, so that the group will know what they will be doing.
We also need to have excellent presentation skills, this is so that the drama academy knows what we are trying to do, and do not feel left in the dark, they need to understand our vision so that we can arrive on the day ready to film, and not waste any time discussing how we should progress.
When editing this piece, we not only want it to look good, we want it to be innovative, something that will look fresh to the audience, due to the way in which Shakespeare scripts can be adapted to different time periods, we want to create a product for Titus, that the audience will not have seen be before.
It is also important for us on the day to be very easy going and friendly to the actors, this is so that they can approach us, if they have any queries, and also table to feel comfortable around us when performing, so that we get a high level of acting from them to help enhance the piece.
